Premature Graying

What is Premature Graying?

The Premature Graying problem is largely genetic. Hair follicles contain pigment cells that produce melanin, which gives your tresses their color. When your body stops generating melanin, hair presents itself as gray, white, or silver. (Melanin also provides moisture, so when less is produced, hair becomes brittle and loses its bounce.) "If your parents or grandparents grayed at an early age, you probably will too,".

Canities, or hair graying, is a process of chronologicalaging and occurs regardless of gender or race. The age of graying varies with race and ethnicity. Hairis said to gray prematurely only if graying occurs before the age of 20 years in Whites, before 25 yearsin Asians, and before 30 years in Africans.

The color of human hair depends on melanogenesis, the process of synthesis of melanin and its subsequent distribution from the melanocyte to keratinocyte. The process is thought to be regulated genetically at various levels. The human hair follicles contain two types of melanins: the black-brown pigment eumelaninsmainly present in black and brown hair and the yellowor red pheomelanins in auburn and blonde hair.
