Dry/Rough Skin

What is Dry/Rough Skin?

Xeroderma or xerodermia, derived from the Greek words for "dry skin", is a condition involving the integumentary system, which in most cases can safely be treated with emollients or moisturizers. Dry Skin occurs most commonly on the scalp, lower legs, arms, hands, the knuckles, the sides of the abdomen and thighs.

Symptoms most associated with dry skin are scaling, itching, and skin cracking. It can occur at any age or location, but it is particularly common on the upper arms, thighs and buttock areas.

The rash itches, but it is never painful and is similar in texture to coarse sandpaper. It is more common in people with dry skin, such as people with atopic eczema. It tends to arise or worsen during winter months when the air is dry. KP is caused by hair follicles becoming plugged by dry skin cells.
Cause of Dry Skin
For many, dry skin is not a sign of a skin condition or disease, but is simply caused by harsh soaps, itchy clothing, misusing moisturiser, and long, hot showers. But the medications you take - and even medical conditions such as diabetes, psoriasis, hypothyroidism, and malnutrition can also cause severe dry skin.

Dry skin is caused by inactive oil glands that don't produce enough sebum for lubrication. Dry air is probably the most common cause of dry skin, especially during the winter. It draws the moisture right out of the skin. Dry skin during winter even gets its own name: winter itch.

Prolonged exposure to water - especially hot water - can wash away the natural oils that protect your skin. If you get out of the bath or shower and your skin feels tight, it's dried out. A number of drugs have the side effect of drying out the skin. Usually, dry skin is caused by external factors. But sometimes, it can be a sign of a something going on internally, whether it's a natural physiological change or an illness.
